No Child Locked Inside
Technical BulletinLast updated Friday, April 5, 2019Since 1998, 558 children across the United States have died of hyperthermia from being left unattended inside of vehicles. Florida has experienced 58 of those deaths (most in the U.S. per capita). This year, there have been 29 deaths so far in the U.S. These statistics have illustrated the need to create an awareness program to help prevent these tragedies from reoccurring. The problem was that Pompano Beach Fire Rescue (PBFR) did not have an awareness program to remind drivers the child was being left inside of the vehicle. The purpose of this applied research project (ARP) was to set up a program to teach drivers reminder techniques so they would not forget the child inside of the vehicle. An action research methodology was used to identify the need for and creating an awareness program by answering the following research questions: a) Why are children being left inside of vehicles? b) What reminders will be used? c) How will the program be implemented? and d) How can the reminders be distributed to the public? The procedures involved tracking incident responses of fire departments to children being locked inside of vehicles in the local area, as well as conducting a random survey. Despite some limitations being encountered, due to limited incident tracking reports completed from neighboring agencies, a 95 percent confidence was accomplished by completing 400 random surveys. Recommendations were made as to how PBFR should proceed with creating a No Child Locked Inside Awareness Program by providing an Action Plan to follow.
