The problem is that the Burlington Fire Department does not have a program to reduce the potential for death, injury, and property loss due to fire for college students who live in off campus housing in the City of Burlington, Vermont. The purpose of this descriptive research was to identify a program to reduce the potential for death, injury, and property loss due to fire for college students who live in off-campus student housing in the City of Burlington, Vermont. Research questions included: (1) What risk currently exists for college students who live in on and off-campus student housing in Burlington? (2) What college based fire safety programs are currently offered to students who attend college in Burlington? (3) What programs are currently in use in other college communities to address off-campus student fire safety? (4) What intervention strategies can be implemented to reduce the risk of fire death, injury or property loss to students? (5) What organization(s) is best suited to deliver an intervention strategy to students in Burlington, Vermont? A review of existing data identified geographic area of risk to a defined age population within the City. Interview results and a literature review provided answers on existing programs, connected community resources, and initiated work on fire safety education for college students. A survey provided little useful feedback on existing college fire safety programs. Recommendations included developing a social media campaign to address fire cause in off-campus student housing, teaching students what to do in case of fire, formalizing an ongoing committee to address college fire safety, advocating for the installation of automatic sprinkler systems, encouraging political support of legislative initiatives, and petitioning the State of Vermont Department of Education for mandatory college fire safety education curriculum.
