In 1999, Texas became the first state to pass an infant Safe Haven law. Currently, all fifty states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico all have some variation of the law. EMS Stations and Fire departments have been identified as one of the Safe Haven locations in many communities.

EMS and Fire departments should review the Safe Haven law in their state, district or territory as the law varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

A consolidated summary of state information can be found here. This is one of many resources on the subject. Chief officers or those investigating this topic should verify this reference with current legislation in your state, district or territory.

Thank you to the Port Arthur Fire Chief for thinking proactively and helping us all be better prepared.
