What is a PECC?

The PECC acronym in this case stands for Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator.

There are currently nine states involved in the PECC Learning Collaborative (PECCLC). They include Connecticut, Kentucky, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

A PECC could be made up of an individual, group of internal people or a combination of internal and external people with appropriate experience and willingness to be a part of the pediatric emergency care coordination for an ESO. Job titles could include EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, prehospital RN, medical director or Performance Improvement Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the liaison between your state EMS for Children (EMSC) and your organization
  2. Promote pediatric continuing education opportunities
  3. Advocate for the availability of pediatric medication, equipment and supplies
  4. Encourage pediatric simulation/hands on pediatric skills assessment
  5. Collaborate with other ED and EMS PECCs
  6. Promote agency participation in pediatric prevention and community outreach activities
  7. Engage in performance improvement activities
  8. Promote family centered care

Qualifications

  1. Paramedic, Prehospital RN, Advanced EMT or EMT who possess special interest, knowledge and skill in the emergency medical care of children as demonstrated by training, clinical experience or focused pediatric continuing education
  2. Maintains competency in emergency care of pediatric patients
  3. May be a person assigned to another role within the ESO such as training officer, field supervisor or educator or working on performance improvement and public education projects
  4. Instructor credentials in pediatric specific topics or courses is highly recommended

Background Checks

  1. Recent child abuse and criminal history background checks should be completed
