Federal laws are in place to help protect individuals from unfair treatment and discrimination in an emergency room. This law give everyone in the United States the protections listed below under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, also known as EMTALA. 

You have these protections:

  • An appropriate medical screen exam to check for an emergency medical condition, and if you have one
  • Treatment until your emergency medical condition is stabilized, or
  • An appropriate transfer to another hospital if you need it
