Developing Non Emergent Response Criteria
Technical BulletinLast updated Friday, September 1, 2006The problem was the Casper Fire-Ems Department was putting its citizens and firefighters at risk by not having non-emergent response criteria. The purpose of the research was to develop criteria that would indicate a non-emergent response. Action research was conducted to answer the questions concerning laws governing appropriate response, criteria that other departments use, issues concerning non-emergent response, and what "best practices" are used by other departments. A literature review, personal interviews and a time study were done to answer these questions. The results indicated that the Casper Fire-EMS Department needs to classify calls. The recommendation was to classify calls with the Priority Dispatch program that was already in place but not utilized at that time.
