Arrived on the scene of a single-story residence with light smoke showing from the roof. L (unit number deleted) was assigned search and rescue. L (unit number deleted)’s officer arrived at the front door with a hand lantern, thermal imaging camera and the Irons Firefighter, who also had a hand lantern. We forced the front security door with the irons. The interior door was unlocked. As we made entry, we were hit with heavy smoke and noticed fire to the right, burning from the floor to the ceiling. We communicated that information to E (unit number deleted) and continued with a left hand search.

Using the TIC, L (unit number deleted) searched to the left. We searched the living room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and den. We found the basement stairs in an effort to search from the fire out. We then attempted to search the other side of the fire where the bedrooms were. E (unit number deleted) had knocked down most of the fire in the area as we proceeded down the hallway. The outside vent FF was taking out the windows around the house while the Engineer was starting the generator to illuminate the scene.

As the officer, the Irons FF, and I proceeded down the hall, we fell through a hole in the floor, landing in the basement. Initially, the situation appeared to be ok. I communicated that we had fallen into the basement and asked for a scuttle-hole ladder. Noticing fire in the floor joist above our heads, we asked E (unit number deleted) to hand us the line so that we could extinguish the small amount of fire. As we extinguished the fire, my low air alarm began to vibrate. We then began to look for the stairs. We could not locate the stairs. We went back to the hole we feel through and were pulled out by E (unit number deleted) and L (unit number deleted) firefighters.
L (unit number deleted) then exited the structure and attempted to establish PAR. We could not locate Fire Fighter (name deleted). Through the confusion, it was communicated that FF (name deleted) was missing. FF (name deleted) was later located as he exited the front door after searching the very bedrooms that we were attempting to search before we fell into the basement. Command pulled everyone out and L (unit number deleted) established PAR.

L (unit number deleted) was ordered by command to report to the (department medical officer) for physical/ (CISM) evaluation. At that time, the only injury reported was pain in the officer’s left shoulder. L (unit number deleted) accounted for all of our equipment assisted with the picking up of hose. L (unit number deleted) then marked in service.
