The research problem was that the Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) had not assessed the impact of organizational culture on the safety culture of the organization. The purpose of this Applied Research Project (ARP) was to reduce injuries and accidents in the SVFD by providing an understanding of how organizational culture impacts safety and recommendations to address and strengthen the safety culture. The descriptive research method was used to answer four research questions: (a) How does organizational culture impact the safety culture of an organization; (b) What are the components of a safety culture; (c) How is the safety culture of an organization evaluated; and (d) How is an effective safety culture created in an organization? Procedures consisted of literature review on safety culture, assessment of safety culture survey instruments, design of a survey instrument for the SVFD, distribution of the survey, collection and assessment of responses and interviews with key stakeholders. Results indicated that perceptions of the safety culture in the SVFD were positive overall, but several dimensions were identified as areas for improvement including: vehicle safety, organizational commitment, measuring and evaluating performance, and rules and procedures.Recommendations include: (a) the implementation of safety management principles, (b) establishing safety as a clear priority of management, (c) enhancing communications processes, (d) renewing the safety focus at the company officer level through additional training, (e) creating a more visible role for the SVFD Safety Committee, (f) further research into improving vehicle safety, and (g) monitoring, evaluating and reviewing the impacts of the recommendations to identify successes and areas for future improvement.
