Fire and EMS organizations have utilized the terms recruitment and retention for decades. Today's reality is that both processes are complex and require separate and dedicated resources to perform at an acceptable level. While promotional items such as license plates, uniforms, and station wear could be considered a part of the retention process, there is much more to working to retain a person in the department. The National Volunteer Fire Council has conducted multiple studies in which it is identified that leadership, cliques, and not being welcomed into the ESO are the major reasons why volunteers quit. We highly recommend you read the NVFC's most recent publication.
