The problem was the Bozeman Fire Department (BFD) does not have a Public Information Officer (PIO). The purpose of the research was to develop a position description for a Public Information Officer for the Bozeman Fire Department. Action methodology was used to guide the following research questions: (a) What qualifications should a Bozeman Fire Department Public Information Officer possess? (b) What are the responsibilities of the Public Information Officer in other fire departments? (c) What are the industry standards for fire department Public Information Officers? (d) What are the industry standards for police department Public Information Officers? A literature review was used to determine standards and qualifications for a Public Information Officer position description. The procedures used to collect data were: (a) surveys, (b) interviews, (c) questionnaires, and (d) analysis of position descriptions from other departments. The results of the research determined the Bozeman Fire Department would benefit from having a PIO position. Recommendations were made to: (a) present the draft PIO position description to Bozeman Fire Chief Josh Waldo for consideration for a full-time PIO position, (b) present the PIO position description to Bozeman Police Chief Steve Crawford for consideration of a part-time, joint public safety PIO position, (c) develop a joint PIO position to benefit both the police and fire department, and (d) present the draft PIO position description to the Bozeman City Manager, Mayor and City Commissioners for consideration of a full-time PIO for the Bozeman Fire Department.
