Provide Client Securement to Wheelchairs

VFIS Logo 287 Rbg

The safe handling of wheelchair-bound clients is an important part of wheelchair van service operations.  Wheelchair manufacturers have developed and tested their equipment to reduce the chance of client injury.  However, these devices require the products to be used in a manner consistent with the manufacturers design and specifications.

During the recent Risk Control survey of your organization, it was noted the service does not utilize lap belts for wheelchairs as a means of client securement during movement to and from the transporting vehicle.

We recommend your organization ensure all owned wheelchairs are equipped with lap belts and those client provided chairs are equipped with a removable securement device to ensure the patient will not fall from the chair while moving to and from the vehicle.  All wheelchairs should be professionally maintained by a qualified bio-medical equipment service in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and inspected daily by your crews.  This daily inspection should include:

  • lo0se or missing hardware from the frame or cross braces
  • confirmation of the operation of wheel locks
  • inspection of the seat and back for tears or sagging
  • verification of functioning lap belt
  • manufacturer approved anchor points on powered chairs.

Your organization should consult the specific recommendations provided for the make and model of owned wheelchair equipment currently in use.  Review the Risk Communique on Paratransit Van Operations for additional information related to wheelchair van operations and steps your organization can utilize to enhance your current safety practices.
