Resolving the Generation Gap
Technical BulletinLast updated Tuesday, March 7, 2017The problem was that generation gaps between career personnel in the Greenwich Fire Department impacted their working relationship. The purpose of this research was to identify the differing characteristics of each generation that can be used by Greenwich Fire Department personnel to bridge the generation gap and improve their working relationship. A descriptive research method was employed to answer the following questions: a) What are characteristics of each social generation found in research? b) What social generations are included in the makeup of Greenwich Fire Department personnel? c) What specific characteristic differences between generations are found in the Greenwich Fire Department? d) What specific characteristic differences between generations are found in the fire service as a whole? e) What characteristic traits of each generation can personnel be made aware of to assist in bridging the generation gap in the Greenwich Fire Department? A literature review provided insight on the characteristics of each of the four generations found in the fire service today. The review also discussed how those differing characteristics create generational gaps that lead to dissension. Surveys were conducted and yielded characteristics for each generation as seen by other generations. The characteristics discovered were both positive and negative attributes for each generation. The majority of the characteristics found in the newest generation were determined to be more negative than those of the older generations. The results were ranked to illustrate the characteristics most often mentioned in the survey. The development of a three part comprehensive plan to address generational differences that includes the knowledge of the likely traits of each generation, open communication between one another in the workforce, and a good faith effort to appreciate each other's differences was recommended.
