Ninety (90) firefighters died while on duty in 2009, a substantial reduction in the number of firefighter fa-talities over many previous years. This total includes 13 firefighters who died under circumstances as a re-sult of inclusion criteria changes resulting from the Hometown Heroes Act of 2003. When not including these fatalities in a trend analysis, the 2009 total 77 firefighter fatalities equals the lowest number of fire-fighter losses on record (77 onduty firefighter deaths occurring in 1992) over the past 33 years.
