Many Henrico County firefighters were unable to meet recommended fitness levels. Descriptive research investigated (a) to what extent members participated in physical training, (b) how the organization motivated its members, (c) what resources were available, (d) how much time was available for exercise, and (e) how the department's uniform policy impact participation. A survey assessed exercise habits and perceptions of barriers to exercise. Departmental records were reviewed to describe fitness participation and time availability. Results indicated many firefighters failed to meet exercise standards, and that perceived barriers, including lack of motivation from supervisors, lack of time, and poor physical resources, negatively impacted their participation. Recommendations included: develop tailored exercise plans for members, increase supervisor participation, and provide more appropriate equipment.
