Severe Weather Response
Technical BulletinLast updated Tuesday, August 30, 2011The problem was that the McHenry Township Fire Protection District has significant potential for severe weather and had not established a procedure for response to these incidents. The purpose of this Applied Research Project (ARP) was to develop a draft procedure and recommendations for response to the types of severe weather most likely to occur within the fire district. The action research method was utilized and the draft procedures are provided in the appendix. Research questions identified the most common types of severe weather to affect the district, the operational challenges presented by severe weather, how other fire service organizations have planned for severe weather, and what should be in a severe weather response plan for the McHenry Township Fire Protection District. The procedures used in this ARP included a literature review, collection of information and data, requests for procedures from other fire departments, personal communications and interviews. The results identified a model to use for planning and provided specific information for the development of severe weather procedures. Recommendations include the immediate implementation of the draft procedures and checklists in appendices B through G as well as additional recommendations in the areas of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
