Secure EMS Portable Equipment

Modern ambulances carry a significant amount of equipment designed to assist in the treatment and care of patients. While ambulance design allows for storage of many items, those items outside of secured cabinets may become projectiles in the event of sudden change in acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. These projectiles may cause injury to patients or crew members.
During the Risk Control Survey at your organization, it was noted some equipment was loose and could cause injury to patients if it becomes airborne.
We recommend your organization secure all portable equipment in the patient compartment (as well as equipment in the front of the ambulance which could cause injury to the driver or passenger). Whenever possible, the securing of equipment behind cabinet doors which are closed securely is preferred. Specifically designed mounts are commercially available for cardiac monitors and provide additional security for the monitor while in transit. Any vehicle additions should be installed by an authorized manufacturer’s representative and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
