Investigate Tower Grounding System

VFIS Logo 287 Rbg

The presence of a communication tower essentially provides your location with an elevated lightning rod, and the closer it is to the structure the less likely that the resulting charge can be safely dissipated to earth without impacting electrical equipment.  As a “lightning rod”, it is important that the communication tower have all of the tower legs connected to a grounding system that provides the most desirable path for the surge or strike to follow and for this path to divide the electrical power among many legs (or radials) before reaching the building.  At the time of the survey, there was no documentation on the testing of the resistance on the grounding system.  It is recommended a test be performed on both the main grounding system as well as the phone system to determine the quality of the ground connection.
